Fuerte de San Lorenzo I

Hola queridos lectores,

Hoy propongo una excursión de día que os recomiendo. Se trata de la visita al Fuerte de San Lorenzo, en la bahía caribeña. Esta fortaleza se eleva en la desembocadura del río Chagres, un lugar estratégico donde se encuentra el principal río de Panamá con el Mar Caribe. Este fuerte se ubica en la cima de un arrecife, en una posición que domina el acceso del Río Chagres, ofreciendo además una magnífica vista al río y al mar.

El fuerte fue construido en 1597, pero en 1671 el despiadado pirata Henry Morgan arrasó las murallas y lo utilizó como base para atacar ese mismo año Ciudad de Panamá. Fue una época de pillaje y saqueo por toda la región del Mar Caribe, y Panamá no quedó exenta de estos ataques.

No obstante, en 1680 la fortaleza fue reconstruida y actualmente sus muros y cañones recuerdan la que fuera una de las principales defensas en Panamá y una de las más antiguas fortalezas de los españoles  en América. Constituye un claro ejemplo de la antigua arquitectura militar.

Anotación al viajero: cuando os queden unos 10 kilómetros antes de llegar al Fuerte, os deberéis detener en el puesto de la ANAM, que es el órgano encargado de la gestión y conservación de las áreas protegidas en Panamá. La tarifa de entrada es de 2$ para nacionales o residentes y de 5$ para extranjeros.

Muy llamativo este árbol a la entrada al Fuerte. Impresiona cómo una de sus ramas está totalmente en el suelo.

Today I propose a day trip that I recommend. This is a visit to the Fort of San Lorenzo, in the Caribbean Bay. This fortress stands at the mouth of the Chagres River, a strategic place where the main river of Panama arrives at the Caribbean Sea. This fort is located on top of a cliff, in a position that dominates the access to the Chagres River, and offers a magnificent view of the river and the sea.

The fort was built in 1597, but in 1671 the ruthless pirate Henry Morgan razed the walls and used it as a base to attack the same year Panama City. It was an age of plunder and looting throughout the Caribbean Sea, and Panama was not exempt from these attacks.

However, in 1680 the fort was rebuilt and its walls and canyons now recall what was one of the best defenses in Panama and one of the oldest fortresses of the Spanish in America. Is a clear example of ancient military architecture.

Annotation traveler: when you are about 10 miles before reaching the fort, you will have to stop you in the position of ANAM, which is the body responsible for the management and conservation of protected areas in Panama. The entrance fee is $2 for nationals or residents and  5 for foreigners.
