Canal de Panamá, una pieza fundamental en la historia

Esta nueva semana quería estrenarla con un post imprescindible. No podía esperar más para hablar sobre el Canal de Panamá. Basta nombrar Panamá y pensar en esta espectacular obra, verdad?

Pues bien, el Canal supone una de las maravillas de la ingeniería mundial. Llama asombrosamente la atención esta operación por su eficiencia a pesar de haberse construido al inicio del Siglo XX. 

Debemos comenzar a valorar la inestimable aportación del Canal al comercio y tráfico marítimo a nivel mundial por constituir una vía acuática que une los oceános Atlántico y Pacífico. La posibilidad de crear una forma de conexión fue considerada cuatro siglos antes de que alguien empezara a excavar.

Veamos cómo ocurrieron los sucesos en la historia. En 1524, Carlos V, ordenó estudiar la posibilidad de construir una ruta a través del Istmo, pero se presume que no se decidió al estimar que los materiales y herramientas de que disponían por aquel entonces no servirían para la tarea. 

Más adelante, en 1880, los franceses iniciaron los trabajos de excavación para construir un canal por el istmo bajo la dirección del Conde Fernando de Lesseps, constructor del Canal de Suez. Pero 20 años después de luchar contra la selva, enfermedades y serios problemas financieros se vieron forzados a abandonar el enorme proyecto.

Ya en el Siglo XX, concretamente en 1903, se firmó en Washington el tratado concediéndole a Estados Unidos la autorización para construir un canal en territorio panameño, y de tal forma, se llegó al 15 de agosto de 1914, cuando se hizo la primera travesía por el Canal. Desde entonces, no ha cesado el uso de esta ruta, situada en una ubicación estratégica por la corta distancia entre los Océanos, una distancia de menos de 80 km.

This new week I'd want to start with an essential post. I can't wait more to speak about Panama Canal. It's just naming Panama and think in this spectacular civil construction, isn't it?

So, the Canal suppose to be one of the engineering wonders of the World, and the eight wonder of the current World. Call the attention astonishingly this operation because of the efficiency despite of have been built as of the first os 20th Century. 

We must begin to value the invaluable contribution of the Canal to the trade and maritime traffic worldwide for build an aquatic way which connects the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. The possibility of creating a connection way was considered four centuries before someone began to dig.

Let's take a look of how happened history events. In 1524, Carlos V ordered to study the possibility of building a route beyond the Istmo, but it predicts that he didn't decide because they considered that the materials and tools they had at that moment would be useless for the task. 

Later, in 1880, the French began the dig works to build a canal by the Istmo managed by Viscount Ferdinand de Lesseps, builder of Suez Canal. But 20 years after fighting against illness and financial problems the were forced to leave the huge project.

In 20th Century, specifically in 1903, was signed in Washington the treaty that gave the US the permission for constructing a canal in the panamanian region, and in that way, we arrive to 8/15/1914, when the first crossing beyond the Canal was done. Since then, the use of the route haven't stopped, located in a strategic place because of the short distance between the Oceans, less than 80 km.

I hope it has been interesting as a way to know more about an important peace in Panama´s history and in the worldwide maritime transit. Other day I will tell you and show you pictures from our first visit to the Canal.
