Casco Antiguo II

Buenos días desde Panamá,

Hoy vuelvo a retomar el Casco Antiguo, como ya os dije, es un barrio precioso, en el que se respira aire colonial, se disfruta de una de las mejores vistas de Panamá, te transporta a una pieza muy importante de la historia del país, y además, recorrer sus calles resulta un placer.

El Casco, ubicado en el barrio de San Felipe, tiene cuatro plazas principales. Una de ellas es la Plaza de Francia, construida en 1922 para honrar al pueblo francés, pioneros en la construcción del Canal de Panamá. Otra es la Plaza Mayor, donde se albergan edificios tan emblemáticos de la ciudad como la Catedral o el Museo del Canal Interoceánico de Panamá. La Catedral metropolitana, ejemplo de arquitectura colonial española, fue construida entre 1688 y 1796. Por su parte, el Museo del Canal data de finales del XIX.

La tercera plaza principal es la Plaza Herrera, originariamente utilizada como plaza de toros. Recibe su nombre actual en honor al General Tomás Herrera, quien fuera Presidente de Colombia y Jefe de Estado del Istmo (actual Panamá). En cuanto a la cuarta plaza, la Plaza Bolívar, se une al resto de información, monumentos, edificios y vistas que dejo como tarea pendiente para continuar mi edición del Casco Antiguo próximamente y seguir aportando un granito de historia de Panamá.

Como cierre del post de hoy, el Convento de Santo Domingo, concretamente os adjunto una foto en el famoso Arco Chato (1678), de arquitectura colonial. Se derrumbó la altura original del arco en 2003, debido al paso del tiempo; pero fue reconstruido en el mismo lugar. Destacar que la popularidad de este monumento radica en que fue el argumento para la construcción del Canal, ya que se comprobó que Panamá era un lugar donde los edificios no sufrían daños por terremotos. Curioso, verdad? :)

Good morning from Panama,

Today I'm reintroducing the post Casco Antiguo, as I told you, it's a beautiful neighborhood, where you can breath colonial air, where you enjoy with one of the best sights from Panama, it transmit you a very important piece of the country history, and also, travel around the streets works a pleasure.

The Casco, located in San Felipe's neighborhood, has four main squares. On of them is Plaza de Francia, built in 1922 to do honor to french people, pioneers in the Panama Canal construction. Other is the Plaza Mayor, where takes refuge buildings such emblematic of the city as the Cathedral or the Canal's Museum. The metropolitan Cathedral, example of the colonial spanish architecture, was built between 1688 and 1796. In turn, Canal's Museum was built as of the end of XIX.

The third main square is the Plaza Herrera, originally used as bullring. This square receives the current name in honor to the General Tomás Herrera, who was President of Colombia and President of the Istmo (current Panama). Regarding to the fourth square, the Plaza Bolivar, and as such as I told you in the previous post, the Casco Antiguo offers so many information, monuments, buildings and sights, so I  remain pending continue with my edition of the Casco Antiguo soon and continue contributing with a few to the history of Panama.

As close point of the post today, the Convento de Santo Domingo, concretely I attach you a picture in the famous Arco Chato (1678), colonial architecture. The original height demolished it in 2003, due to the passing time; but it was reconstructed in the same place. I want to emphasize the popularity of the monument is that it was the plot for the Canal's construction, because it checked that Panama was a place where buildings don't suffer hurts by earthquakes. Curious, isn't it? :)
