"Panamá Viejo"

Espero que hayáis disfrutado vuestro fin de semana, ahora a empezar fuerte la nueva semana. Esta semana quiero compartir con vosotros los primeros lugares que visité. Mis inquietudes como recién llegada me llevaban a descubrir Ciudad de Panamá lo mejor posible. Como estoy viviendo en pleno corazón de la capital, el punto de partida más importante era el de ubicarme y empezar a conocerla.

Para ofrecer una visión histórica de Panamá, debo empezar por la ciudad más antigua, conocida como Panamá Viejo, y se encuentra a escasos kilómetros del centro de la ciudad. Se alude a esta denominación al hablar del conjunto histórico y monumental de la primera ciudad española fundada en el Pacífico en 1519. Este primer asentamiento acabó destruido por los ataques piratas, el último y peor de los asedios fue el dirigido por el pirata inglés Henry Morgan en 1671. Pese a tal destrucción de esta ubicación, el conjunto de vestigios arqueológicos y arquitectónicos es hoy Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

De los restos conservados de Panamá Viejo, la que fuera escala de una de las más importantes rutas comerciales a nivel mundial, destacar la Torre de la Catedral, habilitada actualmente como mirador. Fue edificada sobre un terreno rocoso y jugó un papel destacado como representación del poder religioso. Además de campanario, a la torre se le confiere la función de atalaya.

Para esta visita, que fue un domingo por la mañana, y dado que durante el día se alcanzan temperaturas superiores a los 30°C, opté por un look veraniego y cómodo, sobretodo para recorrer una zona como “Panamá Viejo”.

Hello everyone,

I hope you would have enjoyed your weekend, now let’s start hardly the new week. This week I want to share with you the first places I had been to. My interests as recently arrived to Panama carried me to discover Panama City as well as possible. As I am living right in the capitol center, the most important entry point was locating myself and starting visit it.

As a way to offer you a historical view from Panama, I have to start for the most ancient city, known as “Panama Viejo”, and it’s located in a few kilometers from the city center. When you refer to this name, you are talking about the historic and monumental collection of the first spanish city founded on the Pacific in 1519. This first settlement ended destroyed for pirates’ attacks, the last and worst of the pirate´s siege was managed by the english pirate Henry Morgan in 1671.  Despite this destruction, the archeological and architectural traces’ collection is Humanity’s Patrimony nowadays.

From the preserved traces of “Panama Viejo”, that was scale of one of the most important trade routes in the World, I want to emphasize the Tower of the Cathedral, paymaster as a viewpoint. The Tower was built on the top of a stone mount and represented an important role to the religious power. Aside from serving the purpose of rolling the church bells, was given the function of a lookout post.

In order to this visit, made in a Sunday morning, and because of during the day the temperature here can achieve the 30°C, I choosed a summer and comfortable look, especially to walk in a zone like “Panama Viejo”.
