Casco Antiguo III

Tal y como ya os comenté en posts anteriores el Casco Antiguo es un lugar que permite hablar de él en multitud de ocasiones, cada vez que lo visito descubro algo nuevo en él. Bien se puede decir que San Felipe, el barrio en el que encontramos el Casco Antiguo, es un mundo aparte alejado de los rascacielos emergentes de la moderna Ciudad de Panamá.

Es una zona que ofrece una sensación única de tradición y transición. Conviven en esta pequeña península ruinas, monumentos religiosos, plazas históricas, parques y edificios coloniales sin dejar de perder su atractivo para los turistas.

Iglesia San José, la iglesia del "Altar de Oro"

Se trata de una pequeña iglesia cuyo sencillo exterior oculta el maravilloso altar barroco del interior. La leyenda cuenta que el altar se hallaba en la iglesia de San José en Panamá Viejo. Cuando el pirata Morgan se dirigía a saquear la primera ciudad de Panamá, un día antes del ataque cuentan que un cura hizo que el gran altar se pintara con brea negra, para que su valor real no fuera aparente. Así, sobrevivió al pirata y se encuentra hoy en la ubicación actual estando el altar de oro está al descubierto.

¿Qué os parece la leyenda? A mi este tipo de historias me encantan y me resultan curiosas.

As I told you in previous posts about the Casco Antiguo, is a place that allows to speak about it in many occasions, each time I visit it, I find something new in it. We can say that San Felipe, the neighborhood where we find The Casco Antiguo, is apart from the emergent skyline of the modern Panama City. 

Is an area which offers a unique sensation of tradition and transition. Coexist in this small peninsula ruins, religious monuments, historic squares, parks and colonial buildings without losing its attractive for the tourists.

San José Church, the church with the "Altar de Oro"

I am talking about a little church which simple outside hides the amazing baroque altar inside. The legend tells that the altar was in the San José church in Panama Viejo. When the pirate Morgan pointed to sack the first Panama City, a day before the attack people tell that a priest mades that the big altar was painted with black tar, as a way to the real value wasn't apparent. Like that, survived and today is in the real location being the golden altar in the open.

What do you think about the legend? I love his kind of stories and are so curious.
