Cristo Negro de Portobelo

Saludos y feliz miércoles,

Recientemente estuve recorriendo la bella bahía de Portobelo, y coincidió mi visita con la llegada de la festividad del Cristo Negro, una fecha importante para las páginas de historia y cultura panameñas. Nos encontramos la localidad repleta de puestos de artesanía y comida, y cientos de personas recorriendo Portobelo y alrededores para encontrarse en este espectáculo colorido de peregrinación, devoción y tradición.

Cada 21 de Octubre, decenas de miles de personas abarrotan la localidad para presenciar el Festival del Cristo Negro. Se honra de esta manera a la figura de un Cristo que se cree atendió las plegarias de sus habitantes para salvarlos de una epidemia de cólera.

Sale el santo de la Iglesia de San Felipe a las siete de la noche y la figura es transportada durante seis horas por la localidad. Le acompañan los penitentes y peregrinos, mientras otros esperan a ver la figura pasar atraídos por el festival. Llegada la una de la noche, el palanquín se devuelve a la iglesia, los peregrinos dejan sus túnicas, y Portobelo estalla en una bacanal.

Creo que debe ser una experiencia tanto para los más devotos como para los más curiosos... Algún lector ha conocido de cerca esta fiesta?

Recently I was traveling to the beautiful beach of Portobelo, and matched my visit with the arrival of the festivity of the Black Christ, an important date for Panamanian history and culture pages. We found the locality full of handicrafts and food places, and hundreds of people going all over Portobelo and surroundings to find in this colorful show of peregrination, devotion and tradition. 

Each 21st October, tens of thousands people cover all the locality to be present on the Festival of the Black Christ. Is honored in that way the figure of a Christ who attended the prayers of the population to save them from a cholera epidemic. 

The saint goes out of San Felipe's Church at seven o'clock at night and the figure is transported during six hours, It's accompanied by penitents and pilgrims, while others wait to see the figure attracted by the festival. At one o´clock at night, the transportation is returned to the church, the pilgrims leave their tunics and Portobelo break out in a wild party. 

I think that it must be an experience such as for the most devotes as the most curious... Has someone known about this party?
