Bahía de Portobelo

Feliz viernes, 

Hace un par de semanas estuve disfrutando de una bonita excursión en Portobelo, recorriendo la bahía del que fuera el puerto más importante de América. 

Portobelo y alrededores ofrecen una salvaje y preciosa región conocida como la Costa Arriba de Colón. Situada a unos 40 kilómetros al este de Colón, hace honor Portobelo al nombre que le dió Cristóbal Colón cuando sus carcomidos barcos fondearon la bahía un 2 de noviembre de 1502. 

Enclavada entre colinas se encuentra el que fue el puerto mas rico de la ruta entre España y América durante los siglos XVI y XVII. De aquellos tiempos quedan las ruinas que aún muestran los fuertes y cañones españoles que sirvieron para su defensa. 

De la bahía también me parece muy interesante resaltar la isla Drake (islote que se observa en la última imagen del post) y un excelente lugar para el buceo. Se cree que el cadáver del pirata Francis Drake fue lanzado cerca de esta isla en 1596, después de morir en estas aguas tras atacar Portobelo.

Two weeks ago I was enjoying a nice trip to Portobelo, covering the bay from the place that was the most important port in America.

Portobelo and surroundings offer a savage and beautiful region known as Up Colon Coast. Located 40 kilometers to the East of Colon, does honor Portobelo to the name that Cristobal Colon gave when his eaten away vessels anchored the bay a 2nd November in 1502.

Between hills you can find which was the most rich port in the route between Spain and America during the centuries XVI and XVII. From those times remain the ruins that still show the Spanish fortress and cannons that served for defense. 

From the bay I think that is interesting to emphasize too Drake Island (the island that you observe on the last picture of the post) and an excellent place to dive. The legend say that the corpse of the pirate Francis Drake was thrown near the island in 1596, after dying on these waters.
