Portobelo, el viejo corazón del comercio mundial

Hoy os voy a hablar de Portobelo, se encuentra a una hora y media de Ciudad de Panamá y está en la provincia de Colón. Hablo del lugar que atrajo la atención de Cristóbal Colón por su ambiente natural y su inigualable belleza. Se convirtió durante los Siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII en uno de las ciudades más importantes para el tráfico de oro y plata, debido a sus excelentes condiciones topográficas y portuarias. Por ello, pasó a ser en 1586 el centro comercial del Caribe.

En ella se celebraban numerosas ferias, y allí se efectuaban intercambios de mercancías de metales preciosos. También era la ruta de salida de la embarcación a España del oro procedente de Perú. Tal crecimiento y ubicación estratégica de la ciudad atrajo los ataques piratas, por lo que la ciudad fue fortificada con varios castillos. 

Lo cierto es que la conservación de estos monumentos históricos es bastante buena, y permite aproximarte a conocer cómo se podía vivir el comercio desde un lugar de referencia mundial en la época colonial. De hecho, os voy a mostrar uno de los edificios emblemáticos de lo que en un tiempo fue la Aduana o Real Contaduría. En este edificio se depositaban las riquezas comerciales entre España y América. De influencia renacentista, fue considerado una de las obras civiles más importantes del período colonial en América. Y actualmente continúa siendo el centro de actividad de Portobelo.

Hello to everyone, 

Today I am going to talk about Portobelo, is in an hour and a half from Panama City and is in the region of Colon, surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. I am talking about the place that attract the attention of Cristobal Colon for its natural environment and its matchless beauty. It became during the centuries 16th, 17th and 18th in one of the most important cities for the gold and silver traffic, due to the excellent topographic and dock conditions. Because of that, it was in 1586 the trade center of Caribbean. 

In the city, were celebrated many fairs, and there were carried out exchanges of precious metals. Besides was the exit route of the vessels to Spain of gold coming from Peru. That increase and strategic location of the city attract the pirates attacks, so the city was fortified with several castles, that I'll show you in the next post.

The truth is that the conservation of these historical monuments is pretty good, and allow bring closer to know how that moment could be lived by trade from a place of international reference in the colonial époque. In fact, I show you one of the most emblematic buildings that was a time ago The Custom House. In this building the riches traded between Spain and the Americas were used to store. Of Renaissance influence, is considered one of the most important civil works of the colonial era in the Americas. And nowadays is still being the center of the activity in Portobelo.
